If rockin’ country gets your feet tapping and your blood rushing, you won’t want to miss the legendary Sherwin Linton and his band, “The Cotton Kings.”
Linton is slated to appear at the Log Pavilion on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 3-4:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.
Linton’s career in country music has spanned nearly half a century, garnering accolades everywhere from Minneapolis to Nashville to Las Vegas. Linton performed coast to coast after reaching the top of the country music charts with his single, “Cotton King” and being “discovered” and signed to a long-term contract by country music great Roy Acuff.
Since that time, he’s been nominated for “Entertainer of the Year” and “Best Male Vocalist” by both the Country Music Association and Music City News a during the 1970s. In 1975, Linton’s record, “When She Cries,” won an award for Single of the Year, and he has also been named to the National
Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame, the South Dakota Musicians Hall of Fame, and the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.
Today, Linton continues to travel throughout the country, singing the songs of Elvis, Marty Robbins, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash, as well as many of his own hits and a variety of traditional country, folk, gospel and cowboy songs, along with his wife, vocalist Pam Linton.
A very special guest at this year’s Carlton County Fair Talent Show will be Miss Teen Minnesota 2008, Megan Herickhoff, who will serve as the evening’s emcee. Herickhoff (Miss Teen Stearns County), 18, was crowned Miss Teen Minnesota 2008 on March 9 in St. Cloud. Her platform during the upcoming year will be “The Life and Times of a Real Sleeping Beauty,” which raises awareness about narcolepsy, a chronic neurological disorder caused by the brain’s inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally. Herickhoff said she knows firsthand what this disease is all about, and she said she is hoping to be a positive example to others. “Having narcolepsy has given me the opportunity to share with others how to recognize the symptoms and manage every situation,”
said Herickhoff, “but most importantly to embrace life with courage and determination.”
Herickhoff lives with her parents in Belgrade, Minn., and her hobbies include varsity golf, singing, piano, modeling, acting, photography and German. Sherwin Linton and the Cotton Kings ready to rock the fair grounds Miss Teen Minnesota to make a special guest appearance during talent show
The Carlton County Historical Society – Preserving fair traditions for future generations!
The Carlton County Historical Society – ‘Great’ from any year!
The Carlton County Historical Society will continue its strong presence at the 118th Carlton County Fair this coming August. The Historical Society provides living history exhibits and demonstrations
at three buildings on the fairgrounds: the farm machinery building, the Peter and Helena Nelson pioneer homestead, and the General Store. The Society also maintains the settler’s garden and
Finnish barn.
The Farm machinery building is a must-see for anyone interested in the rich agricultural past of the county. Knowledgeable volunteers will be posted in the space to answer questions or reminsce about the way things used to be done. Some highlights include a reaper binder, workable cream seperators (try your hand at a spin!), and one of the first examples of a school bus.
Spinners, musicians, food afficianados and anyone else looking to relax a bit from the frenzied fair pace should check out the log homestead. Numerous demonstrations of early home crafts,
cooking, and farm activities are offered throughout the weekend. Learn how butter and cheese were made, how people washed their clothes without laundry machines, and how people entertained
themselves without television or computers. The Historical Society’s general store will cater to your
every possible need. Hair needs a trim? An old time barber shop will be set up with new style haircuts by Carlton Barber Darold Powers. Need to buy some fabric for that blue ribbon quilt? The
general store will carry a wide selection of unique textile squares. What about an interesting book? The Historical Society has plenty! We’ll even have representatives from the Carlton County
Geaneological Society to answer your pressing research questions.
Visit with friends, sit down for a cup of ice tea, play checkers, and shop at the Carlton County Historical Society General store.
For more information about the Society’s fair activities or to volunteer, call the Carlton County Historical Society at 879-1938 or email cchs@cpinternet.com.
There’s no greater inspiration for up and coming performing artists than to meet someone who has
already discovered her star. Leisha Gust, Mrs. Minnesota 2008, will be a special guest performer and judge at this year’s Carlton County Fair Talent Contest.
Gust, who earned her crown as Mrs. Burnsville, rose to the top from among 15 other titleholders from around the state of Minnesota during the March 9 competition in St. Cloud. All of the contestants were recognized for their outstanding achievements as individuals and as a vital part of their family units.
As Mrs. Minnesota, Gust’s platform is “Encountering Magic: Make A Wish Foundation.” She has volunteered for the past 17 years with the Make A Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children who face life-threatening illnesses. Gust and her husband are the parents of two boys
and her hobbies include singing (especially anything from the 80’s), working out, pencil drawings and collecting Victorian teddy bears.
An accomplished vocalist, Gust has agreed to perform the National Anthem during the fair’s talent show and serve as a judge for the competition.

One of the few things as magical and memorable as a county fair is a group of clowns – and this year’s Carlton County Fair has both!
Clowns - Just 4 Laffs
For all four days of this year’s fair, the entertaining and endearing Just 4 Laffs clown troupe will be working their own special form of magic throughout the fairgrounds. Whether it’s face painting, balloon animals, magic shows or hilarious fun, Just 4 Laffs will have something for the entire family.
Group founder Wesley Newman (Baloo Baphoon) first started public performing n the fall of 1993, graduated from Mooseburger Clown School in the summer of 1994 and also obtained a certificate
in child care development from Rasmussen College in St. Cloud in 2006. After 13 years of solo clowning, Newman and Natasha (Bable Baphoon) and two children began performing as a family in spring 2006.
Baloo I. Baphoon – a magician who performs small magical illusions to the wonderment of the crowd. Baloo is not only a magician, however, but also a balloon “twister,” creating animals and
other fanciful objects out of balloons. He is a member of Clowns of America Internatinal, the World Clown Association and the Clown- A-Rounds clown club.
Baggie Baphoon, 12, has a pedal chopper that he loves to drive around and mingle with the crowd, and he has been trained as Junior Joey with the Clowns of America International.
BooGie Baphoon is a seven-year-old clown who loves to dance and is just learning the art of clowning and face painting. “There is nothing better than spending time with our children
and sharing the love of laughter and the whole world,” commented Newman.
Wife Natasha has also started “Laffs 4 Life Ministry,” through which she said she “hopes to bring hope to a broken world.” Calling all kids! Why not become a part of all the fun and excitement of
county fair time – and take part in the popular Pedal Tractor Pull! This year’s event is set for Friday,
Aug. 15 at 2:30 p.m. The Pull is sponsored by the Carlton County American Dairy Association. Boys and girls in age classes from 4 to 11 will compete on pedal tractors to see who can pull the most weight for the most distance.
It’s good, clean, safe fun that anyone can participate in, and all equipment is provided. Every child taking part will receive a fun prize for participating. The first-place winner in each age class will earn the right to go on to the State Pedal Pull. Each participant will receive a coupon for a free malt at the
ADA Malt Stand.
Just 4 Laffs will create magic throughout fairgrounds Kids join the fun and excitement of the Pedal
Tractor Pull
Blue Drifters
The Blue Drifters are the ultimate bluegrass band – and ever so much more. Slated to perform in the
Log Pavilion on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., The Blue Drifters bring a great deal of variety to their bluegrass music, with swing jazz arrangements, Irish, rock, pop and vintage country
songs performed in a bluegrass style.
With an energizing blend of flat pick guitar, upright bass, five-string banjo, fiddle and vocals, the quartet recreates the work of such bluegrass luminaries as Don Reno, Ralph Stanley, Lester Flatt,
Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe.
Guitarist/vocalist Steve Howard first founded The Blue Drifters in 1990 and has performed a full schedule with the group ever since.
Banjo picker/vocalist Steve Golz sings lead and harmony and brings with him 36 years of banjo playing experience.
Loy Larson played in top country bands in the upper Midwest for 25 years and performed in shows in Branson, Missouri. A talented singer, Loy doubles on harmonica, mandolin, guitar and other instruments.
Singing lead and harmony vocals with the band is Teresa Olson, who also lends her considerable
talents on bass to give the group a strong bluegrass drive and energy.
Want to kick back, slow the tempo down a bit, and enjoy a soul-soothing interlude while taking in all the excitement of this year’s Carlton County Fair? Be sure to stop by the Log Pavilion on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 1-6 p.m. and enjoy the modern folk sounds of Paul Christian.
Accompanied by a smooth blend of acoustic guitar, harmonica, and slide guitar, Christian has been compared to Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak, something that he finds very satisfying. Following the mode of Roy Orbison, Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovette, Christian has a superb talent for folk songwriting – evidenced in the musical showcase of his first 11- track album, “Never Been Lonely.”
This 36-year-old Minnesota recording artist has more than 30 concert appearances planned around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri this year and is currently busy recording his second album, “Summertime.” Having played hundreds of shows across the country, Christian’s current plans have become quite varied. Numerous TV and radio spots are in the works and radio stations such as Cities 97 in the Twin Cities are continually discovering Paul Christian’s music and adding his work
to their play lists.
Slow down with the modern folk sounds of Paul Christian The Blue Drifters will entertain you with their bluegrass sounds.
