Adapted from an article by Betty Gayle Carlson and Nancy Hanson, Historian
In 1965 the old Swedish log homestead buildings, a small log cabin and a barn, were moved to the
Fair grounds from the Carl Anderson farm three miles east of Barnum. The movers were Hurley Anderson and Tiny Oswell. In 1988 a suggestion was made that something be done with the buildings as they were deteriorating and used only for storage. The first meeting was held November 16, 1988 at the Jim Carlson home. Jim and Betty Carlson with the support of the Carlton County Historical Society toured historic sites around Minnesota to get ideas for the project. The buildings were then cleaned out and surveyed. The Minnesota Historical Society came to make recommendations on log restoration and chimney repair. A floor was put in with the help of Tiny
Oswell and others. The CCHS fair committee became involved. These people were Burton Wieck Bill
Norberg, Frances Gustafson, Elmer Holmstrom, Pete Trygg and Barb Sommer, director. Sadly Jim Carlson died in 1989. Betty pressed forward with the project in memory of Jim. The dream was to become a reality. The first general meeting of the fair and historical society included Betty G Carlson, Nancy Hanson, Bill and Welma Norberg, Timy Oswell, Cynthia Johsnon, Ron and Lois Johnson, and Gordy Aanerud, County Commissioner and Fair Board representative. After much planning and work the Homestead was dedicated at the 1990 Centennial Fair. Our activites were in full force with period costumes, cooking, a garden, washing and barn animals. Members present were Bill Norberg, Al Naslund, Burton Wieck and Tiny Oswell. Unfortunately, Carl Anderson passed away in February of that year.
Some of the people that volunteered through the years were: Betty Carlson and Cynthia Johnson,
cabin, cooking; Tom and Peggy Gray, herdsman; Dave Brigan, soil; Ron and Donette Bushman, horticulturalists; Dee Johnson, flowers; Jody Eller, herbs; Francis Gustafson and Elaine Osborne, costumes; Sue Calverly, master gardner; Nancy Hanson, historian; Bud Paulson and
Carl Johnson, grounds; Betty L Carlson, Hurley Anderson, Burnis Maki, John Schwoch, Louella and
Lawrence Ludin, photographers; Ellen Quinn, director of CCHS; Agnes Lammi, quilter, and many
Carlson grandchildren.
Activities that first year were: quilting, rug braiding, gardening, spinning, whittling, laundry and soap making, cooking (Swedish brown beans, bread, jam, stews, etc). We were able to give samples along with recipes. The Moose Lake Kitchen Band led by Myrtle Nickleson performed as well as Anne Larson on the harmonica.
In past years animals of the period were displayed: cow, sow, sheep, ram and chickens. Literature was handed out on early animal breeds and garden varieties. The garden is currently tended to by Master Gardeners John and Joanne Rosberg, who have been assisted by the local Kids’ Plus group.
By 1993 it became obvious that major work needed to be done on the cabin. Upon the recommendation of MHS, we undertook the replacement of many logs and the siding of three sides of the building. Most of this was done by the Golden K Kiwanis of Cloquet. In 1994 a group of volunteers built a much needed porch as a wonderful staging area for our activities. Those involved were: Ed Ballman, Herb Basney, Hugh Fairbairn, Harvey Fisholm, Art Gilderman, Sherm Griffin, Ken Koski, Arvo Lahti, Will Mackey, Len Richey, Bob Rosen, Elmer Spiett, and Larry Urbanski. For a time a family lived in the homestead during the fair as part of their home school curriculum. They were in period costume, tended animals, cooked, spun, washed and gardened. Fairgoers were fascinated
with the interpretation of real life then and now.
Other buildings in the Homestead Area include the Machinery Building, operated by the Historical Society and Ron Osborne, the Blacksmith Shop, operated by area blacksmiths, and the General
Store. If you’d like to volunteer please call the Fair Office or the Carlton County Historical Society.
The Fair Board greatly appreciates the cooperative efforts of all those involved in keeping the Homestead Area up and running. These buildings and volunteers, to numerous to mention, continue to bring local history to fair visitors.
With some of these building dating back to 1900, today we hope they stay here forever. Restoration of the Homestead at the Carlton County Fair
